Vocabulary Development
Vocabulary development is much more extensive then phonics or phonemic awareness. When the students enter school, they enter school with a limited vocabulary and could consist of only environmental print. Students increase their vocabulary by 3,000 to 4,000 words per year. When the students graduate high school he/she could possibly have a word base of 50,000 words. Vocabulary development is critical for the English Language Learners. Based on research the is a large gap between the number of words middle class students understands and a student from poverty.
Interactive Oral Reading is one of the first approaches you can take to improve vocabulary.
· The adult reader focuses the children’s attention directly on the words.
· The adult reads fluently, using an animated and lively reading style.
· The books are interesting and enjoyable and stretch the children’s thinking.
· The books contain somewhat challenging words that children are likely to encounter in the futuer.
