Reading in Content Areas
Students have to be able to read and comprehend successfully on grade level in order to be able to read and comprehend in other content areas. Students use prior knowledge to help with content area reading and if the students do not have the prior knowledge to build it could make the content area reading difficult.
If the students various degrees of prior knowledge, the teacher can have the class complete some before reading activities in which students will be able to build upon their prior knowledge, during reading activities to measure comprehension and check to make sure the appropriate connections are being made and then after reading activities to expand prior knowledge and deepen understanding. Variouse activities to continue include are: modeling, brainstorming, predicting, skimming, preview headings, learn crucial vocabulary, reread, infer, and summarizing will help the students successfully meet their needs in the content areas and various state mandated test.
